Shedding Light on an Indoor Palm Tree

An indoor palm tree can be a unique and interesting addition to the interior of a home, residence or business. There is just something special about the look of a palm tree that gives it the ability to make the transition from an outdoors plant to an indoor one. The presence of a palm tree inside the lobby of a hotel gives the inside of the hotel quite a nifty look.

However, there is a question regarding an indoor palm tree: how does the indoor palm tree get adequate light so that it is able to survive indoors - and how does it get enough water and soil nutrients. Palm trees are most associated with sunny environments such as California and Florida. How can it exist in an interior that does not have that kind of sunlight or that quality of soil?

Well, no one said that maintaining an indoor palm tree was all that easy. But, no one said that it was impossible either. The way the indoor palm tree is able to get adequate light is by using a fluorescent lamp. While the fluorescent light will never match the life-giving light of direct sunlight, three hours or so exposure of this kind of light will allow the indoor tree to get a sufficient life supporting blast of light. In addition to that sunlight, you should regularly add nutrients to the soil, including magnesium and potassium.

Now, this does not mean that the palm tree never gets exposure to natural sunlight. Of course it does. It would be cruel and unusual punishment to deny the tree any sunlight. In fact, it should get as much natural sunlight as possible. If you have any windows you can place it near, you should consider doing that. However, the rays of sunlight that are able to get inside the interior of where the palm tree is stationed may not be enough. So, the artificial light picks of the slack and gives the indoor palm tree that extra boost.
