What is a Sago Palm Tree

A Sago Palm Tree is found in warmer climates. It is not actually a genuine palm tree. It was named this because of its resemblance to traditional palm trees. The sago palm tree grows wild and many people have them in their yards. While pleasant to look at, they can be difficult to cultivate and maintain.

The Sago palm tree is susceptible to insect infestation. The insect will cause the plant to develop scales on its trunk and leaves which may be difficult to treat. The scales when rubbed off will appear again in a few days. As the insects breed, they will begin to take over the plant. It will slowly begin to die. There is medication that a person can give the plant, which is expensive, and cannot guarantee the plant will survive. Many garden experts suggest removing the tree and all others and replacing them with smaller palm trees that will not be affected by insects.

The Sago palm tree can also make dogs fatally ill. When a dog eats the leaves or the nuts that grow on the sago palm, the dog will get very sick. Though there is not a reason that can be determined, if the dog does not seek medical attention right away, it will die. It is best not keep a sago palm tree if one has a dog or has neighbors that have dogs. If the dog can be taken to the vet on time, then medication will be given to the dog and it should make a full recovery. Only use these plants in a garden or yard if they can be taken care of properly and not be eaten by dogs. Some plants are not worth the effort of maintaining. There are many other varieties of palm trees, but if a person likes the sago palm tree, they must make sure it will be well taken care of.
